ELWOOD, Ind. (September 7, 2018) – Red Gold is excited to announce the date of its annual Crush Hunger Saturday that will take place on Saturday, October 13th, in downtown Elwood, Indiana. The three-part event includes the 7th Annual Run to Crush Hunger, 33rd Annual Red Gold Chili Cook-Off and Colts Blue Saturday. For the seventh year in a row, the Run to Crush Hunger unites local communities to promote healthy and active lifestyles, while fighting hunger in Central Indiana by giving back to local area food banks.

This year, Elwood’s new school Superintendent Casey Smitherman is thrilled to be involved in a community event that supports good nutrition, active lifestyles, and giving back to those in need. “I can’t wait to see so many school children participating in the triple play day that includes fitness, fun, chili, and the Colt’s Blue Saturday!”, says Smitherman. This is a great way to expose our youth in Indiana to wellness and philanthropy at the same time. “I hear so many great things about the heart of Hoosierland, and the amazing event in Madison County that hosts hundreds of folks from out of town,” she continues. Just last year, Congresswoman Susan Brooks was the grand marshal of the run, and this year organizers have a new special guest coming from Indianapolis. The event attracts walkers and runners from over 58 Indiana counties, and 8 states.

The Red Gold Run to Crush Hunger starts at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Joseph Center in downtown Elwood and features a 10K run, 5k run/walk and a 1-mile family walk. This year will again feature new race routes that tour some of Elwood’s most historical landmarks, homes and ends at the Red Gold Chili Cook-Off. Following the race, Red Gold invites participants and the community to enjoy the Chili Cook-Off, which includes chili tasting, shopping at craft vendors and enjoying beverages at the craft beer and wine garden. “There is literally something fun for everyone,” said Tim Ingle, VP of Human Resources at Red Gold, who encourages families, friends and neighbors regardless of their appetite to walk, run or simply have a bowl of chili on a beautiful autumn day. Families can also enjoy entertainment from the Indianapolis Colts-in-Motion with mascot, Blue, the Colts Cheerleaders, Red Gold Pro Fisherman Todd Hollowell and the Pacers Fan Van.

Since the race’s inception in 2012, more than $229,000 has been donated in the effort to fight hunger in Hoosier communities. “We are proud of the continued growth and success of the race each year. As the race grows and registration numbers hit an all-time record, we are encouraged by the mission of crushing hunger in our communities,” said Kelsi Fullenkamp, Race Director for Red Gold. Each race participant’s entry will provide roughly 120 meals to families affected by food insecurity in Central Indiana.
